2012 Devil Mountain Run Canceled

The 10k race that has been held every year in Danville since May 1978 has been canceled.  The charity that has put on the race as a fundraiser for all these years, Children's Hospital in Oakland, simply feels it is no longer an effective means of raising money.  We in the Class of '79 had two opportunities to run it while we were still attending San Ramon High.  I ran both those years (and then for another 32 years, as well!).

It was nice for me to be able to "go back in time" in a sense as I was still doing the same thing I had done all those years ago.  Growing up in Alamo was kind of like growing up in a small town, although it really was just part of the huge San Francisco Bay Area and all the suburbs.  Coming back "home" to do the run gave me the illusion that the "small town" experience still existed in Danville.  

I am hoping that we can keep the race going, but I'm depending on my Danville friends to contact the right people in the community to make that happen.  I've contacted race officials from here in Maryland, but to get the race going again, we'll need a local person to do the hard work of meeting city officials and coordinating with other groups.  And I have my website dedicated to the Devil Mountain Run, which will be hopefully be useful as well.

Someone else in our class has passed away.  I just learned this today.  It happened in a Walnut Creek hospital in mid-December, but since I have only read this on a Facebook page I am reluctant to post the name online until I can post something more official (like a news clipping) or hear something from the family.  If you e-mail me directly, I will tell you what I know.  

You know, we're not that old and these events shouldn't be happening!  Very sad.

Mark Myers Obituary

Mark's obituary was published today in the Sacramento Bee and the Contra Costa Times, as well as online. Kind of appropriate that he's wearing a hat, since he always wore one! But, for a guy in his early fifties, Mark had a great head of hair (and probably didn't need the hat.)

"Mark Myers passed away Thursday October 6. I do not
have any details regarding his passing. . ."

"There will be a memorial service at the Danville Community Presbyterian Church
on Sunday October 16 at 2:00pm. "

Future location of website.

This blog originally was created to help publicize website address changes. In 2008, AOL shut down its free hosting services, where the original page had been located since 1998. Soon thereafter, Yahoo shut down its GeoCities page. I decided to store all the files on my Apple MobileMe/"Dot Mac" servers. Well, Apple has decided to shutter its MobileMe service in favor of iCloud, so that means that the homepage.mac.com/johnbramsey/SanRamonHi/classof79.html address will be defunct. Fortunately, Apple has given us until June 30, 2012, which is a lot better than the usual 30 days notice these companies give.

I've got ownership of domain names SanRamonHigh.com and SRVHSClassof79.org, so the goal will be to make the actual location of the files less relevant than simply knowing the domain names above.

I have just began using Dropbox to store up to 2 GB of files online. They offer a public folder which should be adequate for storing my high school memorabilia files. The address doesn't exactly roll off the tongue -- http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36395968/SanRamonHi/classof79.html -- but that's why we own srvhsclassof79.org, right?

I hope to keep this site going for many years to come. Much of the content is static -- like yearbook photos and school newspapers. Although there now are websites out there that have online versions of old yearbooks, I still plan to keep this site alive.

2010 Devil Mountain Run T-Shirt page

My last post was written two days after our baby boy came home. Yes, a new baby has definitely curtailed blogging time. So have some other family matters that came up in March.

Today, I wanted to post a link to a new web page I just made. I'm getting ready to run my 33rd consecutive Devil Mountain Run in early May, so I thought I'd create a website with old Devil Mountain Run shirts. This site has about 20 scanned DMR logos, flipped into a miror image for use as iron-on patches. Check it out if you want to re-create an old shirt.

Also, this year runners can help make more money for Children's Hospital when supporters donate at our DMR participant page.

Baby Boy for the Ramseys!

We are proud to announce that our baby boy entered the world on Sunday, February 21, 2010. He weighed 8 lbs., 15 oz. and measured 21 1/2 inches. If you were at the '78 & '79 30 Year Reunion in October, you may have met my then-Five-Months-Pregnant wife, MaryEllen, at the event. We are all now home and enjoying this new addition to the family. While he may not be the very last son or daughter born of a member of SRVHS Class of '79, I'm sure he'll be one of the last. I just hope I can stay active into my 60's enough to keep up with my growing boy!
